Haunted Funeral Home: Inkster, MI

The Haunted Funeral Home has been a staple of the haunt industry in Michigan for a long time now. A prime example of an old school haunted house, the Funeral Home is a step back to an era where large sets and animatronics were not a major part of the industry. Instead, the focus is on tight, claustrophobic paths with low-lighting and actors that deliver scares right in your face. This approach can produce some of the most enjoyable experiences that stand out from the rest of the pack. Unfortunately for this house, timing issues with the actors and a shockingly short house combine to create a memorable experience for all the wrong reasons.

The Haunted Funeral Home uses minimalist set design, mostly taking you through various facilities of the home, in low lighting, connected by black corridors that are barely wide enough to walk though. This type of design has the ability to create an amazing house with a strong assortment of actors that can cut through the dark atmosphere and deliver hard hitting scares. While the actors in this house do have good energy in a lot of cases, there is a consistent issue with trying to time the scares. A majority of the scares come from areas that are off to the side and by the point the actor jumps out, the scare is coming from behind. This was a consistent issue, despite there just being two of us going through the house. It is hard to get scared when things are going on behind you. However, when there are good scares, they are impressive. For example, the final actor with a chainsaw that comes out of the dark from in front of you is jarring and incredibly effective. There is just not enough of those situations to make up for the rest of the issues though.

The other major issue of this house is just how absurdly short it is. It took us roughly three minutes to walk through the entire experience. Listen, this is not the biggest location for a haunted attraction, but surely a different layout can be used to make it longer than what is offered here. It is just not worth paying to go through a haunted house this short, and when we got out of the house, people that had been in the car next to us were bewildered that we were done already. They apparently were wondering if they should go through or not and seeing us go through so fast probably pushed them away. It is understandable because a house being over so quickly is just unacceptable.

There really isn’t too much to say about the Haunted Funeral Home. The issues the house face make it a really hard one to recommend unless you are like us and enjoy doing bad things from time to time. A down year for sure, this house needs to make changes if it wants to be successful.
