Blood Fest: A rough celebration of horror

Blood Fest: A rough celebration of horror

The first horror film out of Rooster Teeth, Blood Fest is about a group of friends that go to a huge horror festival, celebrating all styles of horror. Unfortunately, they soon learn the ringmaster of the event plans to shoot a new horror film, and the attendees will play the victims, and this time, the violence will be real. Blood Fest is a fun time, but does try too hard at times to be witty, and viewer enjoyment may be affected by awareness of other Rooster Teeth work.

In bringing the horrors into “real life”, Blood Fest does a great job at explaining how the creatures are existing in our world, and how the leaders managed to convince them to kill. The acting is acceptable by most of the actors involved, although the non-professionals can easily be spotted among the cast. The movie picks up the moment our group is inside the festival, and is a fun romp for quite awhile. How much fun you have will depend on prior knowledge on Rooster Teeth. A lot of the humor of the movie comes from understanding the various cameos from Rooster Teeth personalities. That is not to say that the movie isn't funny without them, because there are a few genuine laugh out moments spread throughout.

The movie does also take a downward turn after its rather predictable twist near the end. The finale is not satisfying enough, and it doesn't feel like main character Dax gets his rightful retribution. Also, the movie tends to believe it is smarter than it actually it is. It seems to be wanting to make a statement on how horror is viewed by the media, but it never comes off as entirely clear. Overall though, it is a fun time, and not a bad time to just sit back, relax, turn off your brain, and have a fun time.
